Interview (nl): 1349

Norwegian band 1349  is a big name in black metal. Despite some experimental elements in their recent albums they are definitely pure in their style and performance. Guitar player Archaon was willing to provide some info.

- What is black metal all about for 1349?

In 1349, we see our musical form of somewhat obscure art, as a channel where we can express ourselves in a wider aspect.

- Some bands see black metal as a pure worship of Satan in a theistic way. What do you think about that? Should that be the definition of black metal?

I'll let that be up to each and everyone to make their mind up themselves- as I cannot see the point in putting up rules and boundaries in one's existence. Religion makes the game a whole lot easier, putting up a frame for how to live your life according to a specific set of rules. For some I guess that can work in a constructive way- however, not for me.

- What is the main goal for the band? Is it mainly about a message, or is it about making dark art?

The main goal for 1349 is to fulfill our own desires with regards to making the kind of music that we do. It may sound like a clichè because a lot of bands say that, but it's genuinely why we still care to do what we do, under the banner of 1349. It has outgrown us, so to speak... And now lives it's own life. As long as we feel that we have something to add, there is potential and interest, you know. None of us "has" to do this- but we choose to continue creating more dimention to 1349.

- Your first demo’s were released at the end of the ‘90’s. Was it hard to compete with the other well known bands? Did you feel you were accepted as an original band?

Back in the time when 1349 was formed, I wasn't a part of the band. The guys recorded a demo that they kept for themselves very early, then a year later they recorded a new demo called "Chaos Preferred" which was the first impression that I got. There was a lot of potential there, and when I was asked whether I wanted the space as guitarist, I accepted. The band seemed to have a lot of drive, a hunger to create something in opposition to all the watered out subgenres at the time. I like to think that I was the last part of the puzzle, laying focus on speed and musical techniques. From that moment and forward, we kept working really, really hard and prior to the release of "Liberation" (2003), we started to gain attention in the scene for real.

- Norwegian black metal was the main source for the genre, but nowadays it seems that other countries are taking over and that Norway is more represented in the post-black genre. What are your views on this?

I don't follow the scene enough to comment on this. Every now and then, there is a great band- also within Black Metal, as with most genres of music. Whenever I stumble across such a band, I focus attention towards that.

- How is it to work with Frost? He must be extremely busy with Satyricon.

He is an awesome artist with talents exeeding his work behind the drum kit. Playing in two bands keeps him busy, but makes it work... I suppose prioritation is the keyword here. Whenever he has been unable to join us on the road, we've been lucky enough to enjoy the pleasure of playing with other talented drummers, such as Tony Laureano (ex-Nile, Dimmu Borgir etc.)

- Candlelight is known as a pretty big label. Why did you sign with Indie Recordings?

Indie has got most of the Norwegian bands worth mentioning today, I'd say they're not way off in what they're doing either. When our contract with Candlelight expired, Indie came up with the best offer- so the choice panned itself out towards them.

- You’ve toured with Celtic Frost and Triptykon. Is 1349 longing for more thrash metal?

In 1349's music, one can hear many different influences and sources of inspiration, thrash metal being one of them- besides for instance Black and Death metal. We will continue to make music the way we feel it works best. When that is said: Celtic Frost is a top favourite band for some of us, Carcass (which we've also toured with)  being another one.

- I’ve heard numerous of black metal musicians tell that they are “in to” electronic music. Do you think that this is coincidence?

I have absolutely no idea.

- 1349 appeared in Peter Beste’s book True Norwegian Black metal. How did you get in contact with him? What do you think about the book he made?

Frost was the one that somehow got to know him, and after that arranged a photo shoot in a cave. The pictures turned out great, just like a lot of Peter's pictures have done. The book is cool, a one-of-it's-kind, I'd say.

- In a few weeks The Slayer Diaries will be released. Have you heard of this book? What do you think of the idea behind it?

No, I wasn't familiar with that.

-  The media attention around black metal is not that immense anymore as it used to be. Even in the “metal media”. Do you see that as a good thing?

This is a two-edged blade, so to speak. In the music scene, one element is dependent on another, so in that way, I guess it's working in our favour. On the other hand, I believe that any genre within metal music tends to wither and die out, as a consequence of falling into generic paths/trends. 1349 is definitely not one of them- I'd rather leave than seeing that turning into 1349 reality. And I think that's the way we all feel about this.

- The reactions on the previous album, Revelations Of The Black Flame, were quite mixed. How important are reviews for you? Do they have any effect on your music?

No, absolutely nothing. If there is something that we'd like to try out, we will- with reference to your last question. About "Revelations of the Black Flame": We knew that it'd stir up a bunch of discussions before the release, but we still felt that for us, it was the nessecary thing to do- at that time.

- Demonoir was more pure traditional black metal than the previous one. Did you feel a need do so, or is it just a development as any other?

A lot of the material for both our latest albums was written simultaneously, so there was a process of separating what was to be one album, and what on the other. In that way, "Demonoir" is a follow up to Hellfire more than to "Revelations..." Also, personally I see "Demonoir" as a much more diverse, raffined and complex album than for instance "Hellfire", although the speed is present on the majority of the songs.

- Which black metal bands do you recommend? Any bands that are under-appreciated in your opinion?

The last band to capture my attention was the US band Wolves in the Throne Room. And I think DHG's (Dodheimsgard) last album is pretty fucking underrated. It's a masterpiece!

- Any chance for a concert in the Netherlands soon?

We are currently in the plans of setting up a European tour with our new booking agent, Factory Music. So the answer to you question is yes, that is very likely to happen...

- When can we expect a new album? Any style changes again?

It would be a shame if the Apocalypse was not accompanied by a 1349 album, I think... So isn't it 2012 it's going down? Time will show, and we are the chosen ones to be there, representing. And as always: Expect the unexpected...

- Thanks a lot for this interview!

Column (nl): Mijn black

Metallica was mijn muziek.

Mayhem is lange tijd veruit mijn favoriete band geweest. Natuurlijk kocht ik ook wel andere albums. Immortals Pure Holocaust, Emperors Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, Burzums Filosofem, maar Mayhem, vooral De Misteriis… bleef het echtst voelen.

Column (en): My black

15 years ago I discovered black metal. Well, if you would call Cradle of Filth black metal… Before I listened to stuff like Metallica. I think I was what you would call a fan. I owned all the albums and listened to them every day. Metallica was my music. I knew that it wasn’t perfect, but it was the best music I knew.

Someday in a record store I found an album with artwork that somehow intrigued me. Some gothic elements, something dark. I bought Vempire without having listened to it.

That Cradle of Filth album had a certain atmosphere. It wasn’t much, but it was more than I’d ever heard. The lyrics were extremely theatrical, but it was first time I heard a song with lyrics that mentioned Satan. I don’t believe in Satan, I never did, but it fascinated me.

I started to search for information about this kind of music. Of course I didn’t have access to the internet then, so gathering information was a bit hard, but it didn’t took me long to discover Mayhem. Mainly because of the media attention around the band at that time.

When I first heard De Misteriis dom Sathanas I knew that I found what I had been looking for. It was metal music, but with such an intense, dark, aggressive and gruesome atmosphere in it. I couldn’t and I still can’t find words to describe it.

I sticked with Mayhem for a pretty long time. Of course I bought other albums as well. Immortal’s Pure Holocaust, Emperor’s Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, Burzum’s Filosofem, but Mayhem, especially The Misteriis…  felt the realest of them all.

And no, I still didn’t find answer to the question of what black metal is, but I know that I can border it. Black metal doesn’t have to be theistic satanic, it can be atheistic, as long as it’s in an aggressive way. It can be melodic, but it doesn’t have to. It can be fast and it can be slow. The absolute ingredient is darkness. You don’t have to believe in Satan, but you need to have seen the darkness. Otherwise it is impossible to create or appreciate true black metal. Beautiful in all its horror.

Interview (nl): Ondskapt

There are not that many bands that take black metal as such a serious matter as Ondskapt do. Their recordings are as dark as dark can be and their live performances are ceremonies of pure Satanic worship. Singer Acerbus was kind enough to answer some questions about the band, his view on black metal and the (near) future of the band.
- The tour of the beginning of this year has been canceled due to health issues. How are you doing? Is there any information about a new tour?

Well, I am recovering now after have been very ill. The tour we we're talking about was supposed to take place in May, we are still interested in doing this tour another time. We are booked for several live gig's now as my health permits me to go and perform again. First off is Devilstone festival in Lithuania the 16th of Juli, Germany Barther Open Air the 18th of August We are also booked for a US tour in Texas headlining the Prefest for Rites of darkness in December. More tour and live info will be posted on our website www.ondskapt.com and we will most likely be on tour through Europe as well.

- Some black metal bands make a huge effort on stage. A lot of effects, fire, smoke, blood, animal parts, etc. Others just keep it as simple as possible. How important do you think stage elements as these are?

It depends sometimes on the circumstances due to availability and of course possibility in doing things on-stage that would crave permits due to rules and regulations. But no law would let me do what I really would like to do on-stage, believe me it would be a lot more than the things you mentioned and also very messy. For us the most important thing is to enhance an atmosphere, that is that of the most putrid and vile and let the music talk for itself. If you speak of his name he shall appear.

- The term black metal has been the topic of a lot of discussion within the metal world. How would you define black metal?

In 90% of the cases I would define BM in the same way as Alice Cooper once did, as he read the extreme metal magazines or such when he would be on tour in Scandinavia during in the nineties as perceiving it as very "Spinal Tap" where you have one band after the other trying to look more sinister and evil than the other. I would like to say that things today have changed but I would probably be lying. Black metal in its purest form is dark and inspiring not only as a music genre but as a lifestyle for the individual.

- What do you think of the way the genre has been developing in the last 20 years?

I would say that it has expanded and flourished into many different sub-genres through its prior existence as a experimental mixed genre. I think that BM is no longer as easy to define as many band nowadays play the genre in many different ways and express their music through many different forums, building their own platform for existence. Things have of course changed also due to the internet and its free availability of music in general causing higher demand to reach new heights in the industry. Anyone can record a demo even at home and just upload their music onto the net and have a BM band. This was not the case before when even demo-recordings costed money and effort to record. I would say that in certain degrees that the BM scene has become greatly developed and has a lot potential to grown even more, even though its purity has come somewhat diminished.

- As a pure black metal band, what is your view on the so-called  "post-black'-genre?

I've never heard of it.

- Swedish black metal bands somehow have an indefinable, typical Swedish sound. Where do you think the reason for this lies?

The studio's that have recorded them, the individuals behind the music, outside influences and chance. Bigger BM from Sweden have of course developed the trademark "Swedish BM" by simply being the band or bands that represent our country. Bands like Bathory, Marduk, Nifelheim and such have been kind of leaders in the Swedish BM scene and their sound is unique enough, but I think that what also give a significance is the fact that the recordings of certain BM albums became so good because of their productions.

- According to you, which bands deserve more attention than they are getting right now? Which bands do you admire? Any bands that you’d like to tour with?

Sweden has few BM bands at all that I feel interested in. What I feel would be highly interesting and important would be to see Ondskapt and Ofermod on a live tour.

- After the nineties black metal has slowly pushed back deep into the underground scene. Do you see this as a good thing?

I believe that this happened due to the search for that of what once was, the truth is it can never be regained not even by the individuals responsible for all of the commotion. But the underground scene is important none the less due to its integrity. The mainstream BM scene is only there to make profit, I see an innocents in the way BM should go about showing its true colours, when the bigger corporations are corrupt and perverted. A scene that is free and untouched by these demons will always be the more pure and honest and therefor never as appreciated in a whole.

- Erik from Watain once said in an interview that black metal has been seen as a joke for too long. Do you agree with his findings?

I personally see BM as a joke, at least 90% of it at least. The last 10% have at least earned the right to be called BM!

- A lot of black metal musicians say they get their inspiration from outside metal. Where does the musical inspiration originate from with Ondskapt?

There is several "classical" inspirations to our music that I still think to this day have created a spark to light the fire inside to write this music there in lies but also almost anything we could get our hands on that would sound as sick and malignant as possible. When Nabemih and I where young we both enjoyed the old classics within the BM scene but also classical music itself was very interesting for both of us, could be so arcane, vast and dark in its compositions that one simply became amazed. The variations and nuances in the music became so overwhelming at times that it was almost to good to me true. I believe that at that point in time when classical music was written and composed it was the black-metal of its time.

- I have noticed that most times the metal musicians are very friendly, calm people. Same goes for the black metal audience. How does that fit with the extreme character of the Music style and the lyrics?

I'm not sure and there is no point in psycho-analyzing this, although I am pretty sure that this is a fact due to that under all that make-up and spikes and so forth most of them are very normal people that think too much instead of acting. I don't blame them, they have no greater cause or will to power, they simply are only there for the music and are guideless in their mind of what BM is all about as usual! BM IS THE DEVILS MUSIC, THE AUDIENCE SHOULD SHOOT THEIR GUNS OFF INTO EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF WEARING SPIKES!

- There was quite some time between Arisen from the Ashes and the previous album Dödens Evangelium. Has Ondskapt become the most important band for all band members since the release of the latest album?

I don't work with people that do not have the power to instigate their own will into that of what is more important than themselves.

- What is most important for Ondskapt? Is it mainly about the music, or is the message behind the music, behind the band, more important?

I marvel at the fact of where not only reason and common sense is set aside but also hated and cast there of. Mankind is soon as depleted as everything else in this devil's world and is raping itself into that of which is unnatural. New revelations are being written in where perversity versus humanity. My god is at work when demons are possessing you! To believe those whom deceive becomes fact and choirs of taring and shrieking whooms wonder in the night. In this lies a monumental meaning lead to truth. In there lies damnation! Through time passed on, Catharsis is forever lost. In time hellfire devours an unlawful gathering of souls allas a mere insignificance to a greater empire of one. Fathomless guages of a luridly lurking festered, being of unsane mannors loomed at the light smirking at a reflection of beauty so infinite as a sunken dream. All sickness within our malevolent gathering and within our souls is to plunge into being a redeemer such as of a plague to wipe out the impurities that have infested it's self upon humans. Ever so slowly, crawling on its warted edifice perhaps the time will come when this suffering could surpass, though dire certainty tell us otherwise.

- Christian influences are drawn back more and more within Europe, while the Islam seems to be pushing forward. Is your view of the Islamic version of Satan equal to the Christian one?

In the end it doesn’t matter. They are all perverted pigs getting fucked by force far greater than even myself can grasp. They have by birth already been condemned into sickness and twisted logic. As a million so alike, as a herd of sheep, so unclean in everlasting sleep...

- When can we expect a follow up to Arisen from the Ashes?

We enter the studio next year, after that we'll see.

- Is there anything that can be said about a change in direction? Or will it be in the same style as the latest album?

Nabemih and I have decided to move more in the direction of the material of Draco Sit Mihi Dux. I can assure you that it will be special and worthy of a divine cause.

- Thanks for your time!

On behalf of Ondskapt,

/ Acerbus.

Maybe needless to say, but Osmose productions is more than willing to sell the latest album in both cd and vinyl versions. Of course the previous albums are also still available!

Interview (nl): Shining

Just a few days ago the seventh Shining album was released. Shortly before guitar player Fredric Gråby left the band. Shining's remaining guitarist Peter Huss found some time to answer a few questions about the things that have been going on.

- We recently saw Shining perform De Kade in Zaandam, and then you had to take care of the guitar parts on your own out of necessity. How did you think that went?

Well, actually I think it went quite well. A lot of the riffs are divided for two guitars so I guess it didn't sound quite the same. But I think we solved those problems the best way we could.

- How is the search going to find a substitute for Fredric Gråby?

We played together almost all the time together. He joined just one or two months after me and we grew really tight together, as friends and as guitarplayers. So to get to the same level with a new guy will take some time I guess. On our recent shows in Finland a guy from Holland, Sebastiaan Bats, played with us and did a really good job. And it looks like he will stay. But to be realistic we have said quite open that it will take time before a new permanent member is announced.

- Can you tell us anything about the recording process of the new album?

The basic tracks were recorded three years ago. Then we have added things here and there up until late 2010 or early 2011. 3-4 different studios has been used but the basic tracks and the mix was done in the same studio as shining IV and forward. This studio has moved since the "Halmstad" recordings though. Niklas actually gave me free hands to be in charge of the mixing process since I live quite close to the studio and could be more "hands on" during the process. And it was really cool to actually hear all the different sessions put all together for the first time. Even if it was three years old it sounded fresh for the first time. And we are really happy with the result!

But I would like to point out one thing. Some people think that Halmstad is the best album. And it seems that because of that we have to think like that aswell, but we don´t! We have never tried to do another "Halmstad album"! When we heard the final mix of "V" we thought that would be the end of Shining and that people would hate it. So no matter what people might think, we have never and will never look back and try to "redo" an old album.

- Kvarforth has said on several occasions that he basically writes all the songs. Does he go into the specifics or does he give you a certain concept that the band will elaborate on?

Well, he does write all of the basic stuff. I like to see it like he comes to us with a square shaped figure, and we make it to a circle, if you get what I meen? But all of the solos are made by me for example, and also all string arrangements. So my point is that we do add stuff, but the basic song idea is his.

- I think Född Förlorare has to be the most pop music like album Shining has made until now. Has this been a deliberate choice or is it simply a matter of growth?

This is just a natural thing. There are no plans to make this or that. It just turns out that way.

- Shining is sometimes referred to as the Danzig of black metal. What is your view on this description?

Well, that´s the first time I hear that so I don´t know what to say really? I don´t even know if we play black metal at all!? But perhaps it is so, perhaps it´s not? We are Shining and we play the stuff we do, I don´t really like to put a label to it.

- In my opinion, Förtvivlan, min arvedel sounds quite different than the rest of the album. It sounds more like a song that could be from Klagopsalmer. Was this song written at an earlier stage than the other songs?

Can´t remember really..? But both albums were recorded at pretty much the same time so maybe that´s why they might be similar? Hell, I don´t know?

- Who is responsible for the acoustic parts on the album? Do you play these?

If I remember right me and Fredric did pretty much 50/50 of the acoustic stuff. Much because it´s so fucking annoying to record acoustic guitar. A couple of very sensitive mics around you that if you even breath they will pick it up, and you have to sit like a statue for hours... So we really needed to divide these parts as much as possible.

- Tiden läker inga sår starts off as soft and fragile, then turns a bit sluggish and eventually turns into a hyper blast. Can there possibly be any more contrast within a song than this one?

Of course it can. Imagine if we threw in some jazz or samba as well! :)

- How did Erik like to participate in one of the songs? His singing is also very different than his work with Watain.

I wasn't there during that session, it was actually recorded in a different studio, so I don´t know. But my guess is that he liked it and that he sang in a way that fitted the song the most. A lot of anger and despair going on in that song.

- The opening of Människa o'avskyvärda människa again has that typical Danzig sound to it. I'm not a guitarist, but it's like some sort of open chord in the middle of a riff, if you know what I mean. Plagoande O'Helga Plagoande also had something similar to that. Is this turning into a characterizing part of the Shining-sound?

Yes. The "open chord" thing is actually used very often in Shining, and also in the older songs. It might come out more clearly these days but it has always been there.

- Tillsammans är vi allt is my favorite song on the album. Especially the sluggish groove of it is very cool in my opinion. I don't think Shining has ever done something like this before. Does this song give way to the direction Shining is turning to?

Yeah, this is a different song compared to earlier stuff. But I don´t know if this will point out any certain direction for the future? It´s just one song, and the future has to show where we will be in the end.

- By the way, how did you get to the collaboration with Nordman?

We just asked him really. He listened to some of the older stuff and then he agreed to do it. But we did have him in mind for a long time actually, so it was a good thing that he decided to sing on that song.

- I get the idea that I've heard I Nattens Timma somewhere before. What is it based on?

You might have? It´s a cover of a song by "Landberk".

- What does FFF stand for?

Från Födseln Förlorad.

- Have you already been in the process of writing new stuff since the recordings of Född Förlare?

There is some stuff written, but right now we´ll focus on promoting this album and hopefully to tour a lot.

- Thanks for your answers and I hope to see Shining again soon!

Thank you!

To get straight to the point: No, this is not a new Halmstad. That album was pure genius, of which the same standard cannot be met. This does not mean that Född förlorare is a bad album, on the contrary. It's much better than its predecessor Klagopsalmer which was quite changeable.

The first track, Förtvivlan, min arvedel, has been available on the net for quite some time now. At the end of May, a music video will be released of this song. The song is quite dark and seems to be separate from the rest of the tracks on this album, since the asphyxiating pitch black sphere has made way for a quite varied, sometimes almost pop music-like sound on the rest of Född förlorare. Of course it doesn't turn into a party on any of the tracks and of course the typical desperation-like sphere lingers on each corner, but I think that this album will draw a much bigger audience than the previous albums.

Singer Kvarforth sings a lot more on this album and it has to be said: he does a pretty good job with it. He knows how to alternate a lot with his voice. This turns an impressive record into a nice album.

After having listened to Född förlorare a few times now, I think that in my opinion Tillsammans är vi allt is the best track of the album. It's different from what Shining has brought forth so far, but it sounds really cool. The fifth track which characterizes Shining albums is also quite a becoming piece.

Should we buy this? Yes! Definitely! You can order it via Shining's record label Spinefarm. They have editions available in the normal CD edition, also a llimited edition with a T-shirt and as a vinyl. Whether or not special, limited editions will be released has yet to be revealed.
